ReUse Alkeemia Battery Forum 2025

The Alkeemia Battery Forum, held in Venice, Italy on March 21, 2025, brought together experts, innovators, and policymakers to discuss the future of battery manufacturing and recycling in Europe. This high-level event, organized by Alkeemia, aimed to foster dialogue on how to build a competitive and sustainable European battery value chain—starting from raw materials and extending through production, reuse, and recycling.

Markus Borck, representing ReUse project partner CellCircle, delivered a presentation focusing on direct recycling, a process that extracts and reuses battery-active materials without breaking them down into their elemental form. The presentation offered key insights into the technical potential and sustainability benefits of direct recycling and introduced the audience to ReUse’s mission of strengthening circularity in Europe’s battery ecosystem.

The forum explored a range of key themes across the battery value chain, including the creation of a new European value chain with insights from policymakers and industry leaders on promoting innovation and strategic autonomy. It delved into the latest advancements in battery manufacturing technologies, highlighting innovations in cell production and the development of gigafactories. Discussions also addressed battery use and second-life applications, focusing on mobility, stationary storage, and lifecycle extension. Finally, a dedicated session on battery recycling examined current technologies and future strategies aimed at improving efficiency, sustainability, and circularity in end-of-life battery processing.

Markus Borck’s presentation contributed to the Battery Recycling session, aligning with the ReUse project’s core objective: to enable efficient, sustainable, and scalable recovery of materials from spent batteries to support the green transition and reduce Europe’s reliance on critical raw material imports.

We are thankful to be able to share knowledge, build networks, and strengthen collaboration within the European battery innovation landscape.
