Introducing Empa

Introducing ReUse consortium member - Empa.

Empa serves as an interdisciplinary research institute focused on materials science and technology, dedicated to conducting advanced research that benefits both industry and society. Empa’s mission involves developing science-driven solutions to address urgent challenges across various sectors, including energy, mobility, building technologies, personal health, environmental sustainability, and advancement of materials and surfaces.

The Technology and Society Laboratory at Empa has the mission to foster the transition to a more sustainable society through the creation and dissemination of knowledge. TSL accomplish this by examining innovative materials and emerging technological applications, paying particular attention to their associated material and energy dynymics. TSL evaluate these developments in light of environmental constrainst and societal requirements, aiming to provide guidance for the design of more sustainable materials, technologies, and socio-technical systems.

In the ReUse project, Empa:

  • Is engaged in electrolyte management, focusing on purifying and characterizing both lithium salt and carbonate organic solvents.

  • Will explore methods for purifying and regenerating graphite through chemical and thermal treatments, aiming to produce secondary materials of the highest quality that ideally meet battery standards.

  • Will provide support for purifying non-active materials from various recycling sources, including plastics, copper, or steel.
