ReUse Highlighted at Powering the Future Workshop
On March 25, 2025, the Powering the Future event took place at EnergyVille in Genk, Belgium, under the theme "How to sustainably grow industrial battery storage?". The conference brought together leading experts, industry representatives, and EU project partners to explore the path toward sustainable and scalable battery storage solutions critical to Europe’s green energy transition.
Jeroen Spooren, Senior Researcher at VITO, delivered a presentation on direct recycling. This is a cutting-edge technique that involves extracting and reusing active materials from batteries without breaking them down into their elemental form. His talk highlighted how this method contributes to lower energy use, reduced emissions, and more efficient material recovery, aligning perfectly with the ReUse project’s mission to advance circular battery value chains in Europe.
The conference was structured around four thematic sessions, each addressing vital elements of the battery storage landscape:
Setting the Scene: Policy and regulatory frameworks guiding the growth of battery storage in Europe.
Technology, Innovation & Circularity: Showcasing pioneering approaches, such as those from ReUse, to maximize sustainability across the battery lifecycle.
Deployment & Market Readiness: Addressing how battery storage can be scaled responsibly and economically.
Strategic Industry Perspectives: Contributions from energy-intensive industries and battery manufacturers on navigating the future storage landscape.
The Powering the Future event offered an excellent platform for ReUse to share its latest research and connect with other key stakeholders committed to building a sustainable European battery ecosystem.
