Strengthening Battery Standards and International Collaboration

In early 2026, Sortbat, a partner in the ReUse project, hosted two important events in Tienen, Belgium, highlighting its active role in shaping the future of battery circularity and regulation.

The first event brought together leading European experts during the CEN and CENELEC CLC/TC 21X/WG 05 working group meeting, focused on secondary batteries for light means of transport (LMT). Over two days, participants worked on finalising a new standard addressing performance and durability requirements for batteries used in e-bikes, scooters, and other light electric mobility applications. Standardisation plays a crucial role in ensuring safety, reliability, and interoperability across the growing e-mobility sector.

Participants also visited Sortbat’s facilities, where they explored the Xbat.ai sorting line and precycling processes, as well as the company’s involvement in European projects such as ReUse and RISBAT, demonstrating how innovation supports upcoming EU battery regulations.

In a separate event, Sortbat hosted a delegation of approximately 40 stakeholders from Ukraine and Moldova, including policymakers and local authorities. The visit provided insights into advanced battery sorting technologies and circular value chains, with the ReUse project featured as a key example of European innovation in battery reuse and recycling.
