ReUse Starts a New Collaboration with CIRCUBATT
Collaboration across projects is essential for tackling the challenges of a more circular and sustainable European battery value chain. ReUse is therefore pleased to start a new cooperation with CIRCUBATT, bringing together complementary perspectives on battery recycling, circularity and resource efficiency.
Meet CIRCUBATT
CIRCUBATT (Circular Economy Innovations for Resilient, Competitive and Sustainable Battery Technologies) is a Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action (GA No. 101192383, HORIZON-CL5-2024-D2-01-03) running from January 2025 to December 2027.
Coordinated by the University of Greenwich, the project brings together a ten-partner European consortium to strengthen the resilience, competitiveness and sustainability of the battery value chain through the integration of artificial intelligence, data analytics and circular economy principles.
CIRCUBATT addresses the full battery lifecycle, from design and manufacturing to end-of-life recycling. The project develops and validates two innovative business models, Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) and Data-as-a-Service (DaaS), supported by cross-industry tools for automatic battery ageing analysis, lifecycle cost and environmental assessment, and machine learning-based prediction. On the materials side, CIRCUBATT advances sustainable cell and pack design, closed-loop recycling strategies including hydrogen-based treatment of spent lithium-ion battery components, and recovery of critical raw materials, reducing reliance on primary raw material extraction.
These innovations are validated through real-world pilot testing of the BaaS and DaaS models, measuring technical performance, user acceptance and economic viability. By combining technological innovation with new business models and robust sustainability assessment (LCA, LCC, s-LCA), CIRCUBATT contributes to a more resilient, efficient and circular European battery industry, aligned with the EU's climate neutrality and critical raw materials objectives.

The collaboration between ReUse and CIRCUBATT brings together complementary approaches to the same goal: making the European battery value chain more circular, sustainable and resource-efficient. While ReUse focuses specifically on improving recycling and reuse processes for LFP battery waste, including sorting, disassembly, material separation, recovery and regeneration, CIRCUBATT takes a broader lifecycle perspective, connecting circular battery and pack design, recycling technologies, data-driven tools, sustainability assessment and new business models. By exchanging knowledge and connecting solutions across different stages of the battery lifecycle, the two projects can help strengthen the link between how batteries are designed and used and how their materials can ultimately be recovered and returned to the value chain.
The first opportunity to put this cooperation into practice will come this December in Vienna, where ReUse will participate in Going Green – CARE INNOVATION 2026 and co-organise a clustering workshop bringing together European battery projects.
